The History of Pizza

Pizza? Who doesn’t know this delicious food? Pizza is a round and flat-baked dish in the oven and is usually covered with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Pizza also has a variety of toppings such as meat, vegetables, and fruit.

This flat-baked dish turns out to have a long complicated and uncertain history that often led to much debate that occurred. The name of this food comes from the ancient Italian word "pizzicare" which means "pinch" because it refers to the process of making pizza that is quickly picked from the oven machine. Then ‘Pizza’ was inaugurated for the first time in Gaeta, Italy, in 997 AD.

In Indonesia, pizza is often known as high-class food, but in fact, at the first time pizza is the food of the poor. Pizza is sold on the street and has not been considered to be a famous kitchen recipe.

The pizza itself has been a daily food in Italy for centuries, precisely since the Stone Age. The first pizza was a raw toast under the flintstones and flavored with a variety of different toppings.

At that time pizza is food for the commoners who were born in the suburbs of Naples, Northern Italy, around the 1720s. Apparently not only for the poor, but this delicious food was also popular among the family kingdom. Even with a reasonable reason not to reduce the authority of the kingdom at all, at that time the Queen forbade the pizza from entering the palace and forbade the nobles to eat it. But secretly King Ferdinand I (1751-1825) just loved it. In order for him to eat the pizza, he must disguise himself as a commoner and secretly visit a slum.

At first, the pizza was covered with white sauce before the 17th century. Then in 1843 was replaced by oil, cheese, tomatoes, or fish. In honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, who is the Queen of Italy, just in June 1889, Neapolitan chef, Raffaele Esposito, created "Pizza Margherita", a pizza filled with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, to illustrate the colors of the Italian flag. He was the first chef that adding cheese to a pizza.

In the 18th century, pizza has gained popularity and became a tourist attraction, so many visitors went to the poorer areas of the city to try the local pizza of the area.

Then this pizza recipe was brought by immigrants to the United States which later became popular when the soldiers returned from World War II. This is because many soldiers ate and like the pizza when they were in Italy, since then the pizza began to be widely known to the Americans. Along with the times, pizza is becoming more popular in America, which is then the pizza dough is adapted to the tastes of the American community that has a habit of eating with large portions.

In the past, pizza only had one topping, but now pizza has so many variants and many ingredients used for pizza toppings. For example, American pizza, which has variants such as Hawaiian Pizza with pineapple, Cajun Pizza with shrimp, American Pizza with ham or sausage. While there are two types of Italian pizza, there is a Northern Italian Pizza that has a variety of toppings. In addition, there is also Southern Italian Pizza that prioritizes the taste and flavor.

Actually, the first pizza that entered Indonesia in 1980 is a pizza from America and it is not that coming from the Italian countryside. So, the taste of pizza that is familiar with the tongue of Indonesian people is derived from the United States is not from the country of origin, Italy.

Not only in Indonesia, almost all people in the world like this food, ranging from the young to the old people. Various toppings were presented in accordance with the tastes of each country. But what is the difference between Italian pizza and American pizza?

Perhaps so far we have found some differences in the presentation of pizza. That's because Italian pizza is very different from American pizza, one of which is bread or dough. One characteristic of Italian pizza is its thin-sized bread, and some are very thin. As for the American pizza has the bread or dough is quite thick.

It could be pizza in America that initially resembles Italian pizza. However, as it progresses and gets more and more popular, the pizza is tailored to the tastes of Americans.

Analysis of Patriarchy, Feminism, and Gender in The Short Story “The Steel Brassiere” by Iris Sheila G. Crisostomo

Patriarchy A patriarchy, from the ancient Greek  patriarches , was a society where power was held by and passed down through the elder males. When modern historians and sociologists describe a "patriarchal society," they mean that men hold the positions of power and have more privilege: head of the family unit, leaders of social groups, a boss in the workplace, and heads of government. Feminist theorists have expanded the definition of patriarchal society to describe a systemic bias against women. As second-wave feminists examined society during the 1960s, they did observe households headed by women and female leaders. They were, of course, concerned with whether this was uncommon. More significant, however, was the way society  perceived  women in power as an exception to a collectively held view of women's "role" in society. Rather than saying that individual men oppressed women, most feminists saw that oppression of women came from the underlying bias o...

“A Supermarket in California” by Allen Ginsberg

While reading this poem, I was a little confused about the meaning of this poem. However, after reading it several times I find that this poem tells of the poet-Allen Ginsberg's interest in Walt Whitman, an American poet and journalist. Allen Ginsberg wrote "A Supermarket in California" while he was living in Berkeley, California in 1955. This poem is one of Ginsberg's poetry that received the great influence of the American poet, Walt Whitman. Whitman, considered to be the first Native American poet of the nineteenth century, had an influence on Ginsberg's writing. His poetic style experimented on metering and rhythm and avoided the structured lines and verses that were standard forms of poetry at the time. He was an American poet who first introduced freestyle poetry, he also added unusual images and symbols to his poetry, his freedom in poetry earned him the nickname 'father of free verse'. Whitman is known as an eccentric person, both because of his wr...

"Ghosts" by Henrik Ibsen is a tragedy of 3 chapters that tells the life of Captain Alving who is considered to have a good reputation, respectable and influential in the community, apparently not as good as people think.  While he was alive, he had a hidden lousy reputation. He once had an affair with his servant to have a child named Regina and she now works as a servant of Mrs. Alving who is the wife of Captain Alving. Even though her life is not happy, Mrs. Alving always kept this incident a secret to protect her husband's reputation. Even his own son, Oswald, had to be sent to study painting in Paris, even though he was only seven at tha...
