Reader’s Response to “The Secret Garden” Movies

Like other amazing children's stories, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden tells the story of truth and pleasure in childhood. This story not only tells about an event but also provides an overview of how life is. It is a work of beauty and witnessing it is like entering a closed world where one's destiny can be found. This story has been adapted into a film directed by Agnieszka Holland. In this film, Holland returns to make a film about a missing child and is a beautiful and intelligent film. This film is a film that I watched because of the Children Literature course assignment and it really impressed me.

The film begins with the narration of a little girl named Mary Lenox and her family who lives in India. Then an earthquake occurred, causing her to move to her uncle's house because her parents died. Mary had to live with her uncle, Mr. Craven because she was an orphan. Day and night passed, and the little girl began to get bored. In this big house with beautiful gardens, there is nothing interesting. Here, she met her housemaid, Martha. Because Martha always told Mary, her mind gradually became cheerful. Then old gardener Ben Weatherstaff and a redbreast became Mary's new friend. Mary tried to communicate with the robin gently, and the bird, awakening Mary's tenderness hidden in her heart.

After a few days, Mary decided to go around and she found an old silver key on a desk that belonged to her aunt. She also heard a story about a secret garden that had been forgotten and was curious about it. Until, when she walked the road, under the leadership of the redbreast, she found a garden and a secret door. Mary began renewing the secret field with several seeds, and after meeting with Dickon, a sun boy who was adept at gardening; Mary became more optimistic than before. She shared the park's secrets with Dickon, then they explored and cultivated together. Colin is the son of her uncle who always feels depressed and stays in his bed every day. Mary discovered the lonely boy accidentally, and then she also shared her secret with him. By joining the garden cultivation team, Colin became stronger. They spend a lot of their time in this garden.

I enjoy the story because it has a lot of tension. What I don't like about the story is the end, because I hope it will be more interesting. In addition, maybe because this film was produced in 1993, the visualization of the garden when the flowers are blooming is less beautiful. My favorite character is Mary because, in the end, she helped the sick child Colin to smile and stand on his feet again. As the film progressed, I felt happy because Colin got better with Mary's help. In my opinion the film "The Secret Garden" is good and has only one shortage - the visualization of images is less interesting. But the storyline is really amazing.

The author skillfully writes classic stories that even inspire. The Secret Garden has a recurring rejuvenating theme. This can be seen from the reappearance of a secret garden that actually has been ignored. Besides Colin's physical recovery and Mary's development from a moody little girl into a cheerful and inspirational child. From the character of Mary Lenox, we can see the moral of this story that anyone can change. Mary Lennox is a young girl who grew up in India and was orphaned. She was originally an angry, selfish child. However, she slowly turned into a healthy, strong, and caring child. Her heart was filled with joy, and she also wanted to help the people around her to find happiness. I believe it is not an accident that she found the key to the garden. Indeed, the ability to accept new things drives her to find the real key to happiness.

There is always a secret garden in everyone's heart. Old memories of happiness or sadness were collected in a secret garden. However, the garden will become a dark corner of us locking it and forget it. As Mary did, we had to face the past and try to change our minds with optimism. Childhood is not a period of time that never returns; in fact, it must always be in our hearts and also has a big influence on our future. We should protect it and process it carefully before we forget it. When you feel pressured, come out of a narrow personal space and get to nature intimate. Humans can become whole and healthy humans only if they live in harmony with nature.

Analysis of Patriarchy, Feminism, and Gender in The Short Story “The Steel Brassiere” by Iris Sheila G. Crisostomo

Patriarchy A patriarchy, from the ancient Greek  patriarches , was a society where power was held by and passed down through the elder males. When modern historians and sociologists describe a "patriarchal society," they mean that men hold the positions of power and have more privilege: head of the family unit, leaders of social groups, a boss in the workplace, and heads of government. Feminist theorists have expanded the definition of patriarchal society to describe a systemic bias against women. As second-wave feminists examined society during the 1960s, they did observe households headed by women and female leaders. They were, of course, concerned with whether this was uncommon. More significant, however, was the way society  perceived  women in power as an exception to a collectively held view of women's "role" in society. Rather than saying that individual men oppressed women, most feminists saw that oppression of women came from the underlying bias o...

“A Supermarket in California” by Allen Ginsberg

While reading this poem, I was a little confused about the meaning of this poem. However, after reading it several times I find that this poem tells of the poet-Allen Ginsberg's interest in Walt Whitman, an American poet and journalist. Allen Ginsberg wrote "A Supermarket in California" while he was living in Berkeley, California in 1955. This poem is one of Ginsberg's poetry that received the great influence of the American poet, Walt Whitman. Whitman, considered to be the first Native American poet of the nineteenth century, had an influence on Ginsberg's writing. His poetic style experimented on metering and rhythm and avoided the structured lines and verses that were standard forms of poetry at the time. He was an American poet who first introduced freestyle poetry, he also added unusual images and symbols to his poetry, his freedom in poetry earned him the nickname 'father of free verse'. Whitman is known as an eccentric person, both because of his wr...

Characters and Plot Analysis of Ghosts Plays By Henrik Ibsen

Ghosts is a  play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was written in 1881 and first staged in 1882 in Chicago, Illinois, in a production by a Danish company on tour. It is considered a “great play” that historically holds a position of “immense importance”.  This drama has themes about family, lies, reputation, and freedom. "Ghosts" by Henrik Ibsen is a tragedy of 3 chapters that tells the life of Captain Alving who is considered to have a good reputation, respectable and influential in the community, apparently not as good as people think.  While he was alive, he had a hidden lousy reputation. He once had an affair with his servant to have a child named Regina and she now works as a servant of Mrs. Alving who is the wife of Captain Alving. Even though her life is not happy, Mrs. Alving always kept this incident a secret to protect her husband's reputation. Even his own son, Oswald, had to be sent to study painting in Paris, even though he was only seven at tha...
