Analysis of Protagonist and Antagonist Characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This drama has themes about magic, lust, love, comedy, and confusion. The story discusses three different sets, the first of which is a romance between two lovebirds in a magical forest, the second discusses the world of fairy kingdoms and elves, and finally about a group of people who are training for performance for the wedding of the king of Athens.

The story begins when Egeus asks his daughter, Hermia, to marry Demetrius, but because his daughter loves Lysander, they both run into the forest to avoid marriage. This is known by Helena, Hermia's close friend, she also tells Demetrius and follows them. Meanwhile, a crowd of amateurs practiced the drama badly in the forest, and soon their lives changed because of the conflict between the king and the fairy queen. This work has been developed and popularized widely throughout the world.

In this article, the author will identify several characters in the drama AMND as the protagonist or antagonist.

1. Protagonists

Hermia, Lysander, and Helena are the main protagonists in this drama. The drama's main conflict centered on their attempts to get married for love and none of the three wanted to hurt others. Hermia and Lysander are protagonists because they are victims of fate who want to force them to separate, but they take risks and run away to elope and create their future together.

2. Antagonists

Egeus can be considered an evil antagonist because he treated his daughter like his property and didn’t care about his daughter's desire to marry the man she loved. He without feeling guilty, threatening his daughter if she doesn’t follow his wishes, then his daughter will be sentenced to death or become a nun, and live as a virgin forever.

Theseus was an antagonist because he sided with Egeus and was ready to punish Hermia for not obeying his father. Although at the end of the story he changed his mind, but his mandate caused the story conflict to begin.

Demetrius is the main character in the story, and he looking for romantic happiness. However, he is antagonistic and unreliable. He is engaged to marry Helena, but changes his mind and falls in love with Hermia. He persistently pursued her even though she was engaged to Lysander --- all without the influence of potions. He imitated Egeus's hard temper when he said he wanted to feed Lysander to his dogs, and his commitment to Helena at the end of the game seemed to be caused by potions, not genuine.

Conclusion

In this Shakespeare’s play, he divides the character into several characters that are easily identified as protagonists or antagonists. It can be seen from the analysis above that Hermia, Lysander, and Helena are the main protagonists in this drama. Whereas Egeus, Theseus, and Demetrius play the role of antagonists.

Analysis of Patriarchy, Feminism, and Gender in The Short Story “The Steel Brassiere” by Iris Sheila G. Crisostomo

Patriarchy A patriarchy, from the ancient Greek  patriarches , was a society where power was held by and passed down through the elder males. When modern historians and sociologists describe a "patriarchal society," they mean that men hold the positions of power and have more privilege: head of the family unit, leaders of social groups, a boss in the workplace, and heads of government. Feminist theorists have expanded the definition of patriarchal society to describe a systemic bias against women. As second-wave feminists examined society during the 1960s, they did observe households headed by women and female leaders. They were, of course, concerned with whether this was uncommon. More significant, however, was the way society  perceived  women in power as an exception to a collectively held view of women's "role" in society. Rather than saying that individual men oppressed women, most feminists saw that oppression of women came from the underlying bias o...

“A Supermarket in California” by Allen Ginsberg

While reading this poem, I was a little confused about the meaning of this poem. However, after reading it several times I find that this poem tells of the poet-Allen Ginsberg's interest in Walt Whitman, an American poet and journalist. Allen Ginsberg wrote "A Supermarket in California" while he was living in Berkeley, California in 1955. This poem is one of Ginsberg's poetry that received the great influence of the American poet, Walt Whitman. Whitman, considered to be the first Native American poet of the nineteenth century, had an influence on Ginsberg's writing. His poetic style experimented on metering and rhythm and avoided the structured lines and verses that were standard forms of poetry at the time. He was an American poet who first introduced freestyle poetry, he also added unusual images and symbols to his poetry, his freedom in poetry earned him the nickname 'father of free verse'. Whitman is known as an eccentric person, both because of his wr...
